glimpses of what cheryl is into now...
2 things: movies and korean stuff.

part 1: korean stuff
with regards to korean stuff; no, it's not the dramas.

i'm into the variety shows and music scene. they're pretty much refreshing, some time away from american reality tv series, taiwanese variety shows and the intolerable-and-getting-much-worse-by-the-day singaporean television series.

so watching these korean variety programmes are like a mini-challenge i posed for myself. whenever i successfully read and understand the korean subtitles that flash across the screen for a couple of seconds, i'm charged up and even more motivated to spot more words that i can comprehend. it's more than merely watching tv you know ;) i add new words to my korean vocabulary gradually and i learn at my own pace.

novelty, novelty, novelty. :D right now it's g-dragon and lee seunggi on my ipod!

part 2: movies

i feel very tempted to speak to lin again about all the movie techniques and start a discussion. she's currently studying her masters at the nyu tisch school of arts here. after attending a seminar with a film critic recently, i totally agree with his view that great movies move people to action, or have an overall message that they want people to think about.

one recent movie that got me thinking: battle in seattle. directed by stuart townsend. (hey, i'm impressed that he's a director and a good actor at such a young age!) my prof screened this movie during our class last week, and it's on the WTO meeting that was held in seattle in 1999. there were a whole load of riots that happened then, and escalated into a state of emergency. makes one think about humanity, and the agendas that people bring with them.

in this movie there are peaceful protestors, and the group that resorts to destroying private property to protest. then there are the politicians involved in the WTO talks, who are only interested in their own agendas. you should really catch this scene where the doctor representative from medicins san frontiers requests for support for the starving children in africa, and this impassioned politician starts to speak. there's this sense of frustration because people are present there, but really, nobody's listening, they are all seeing what they want to see. eventually, only the african nations are left sitting in the room.

such major roadblocks to making peace and well-being in the world happen.

only thing is, i never want to watch this movie a second time. i was rather distressed when viewing this movie - there was this scene of a pregnant woman, and she couldn't hail a cab home because the demonstrators were out on the streets, plus that escalated into a tense moment when the police took physical action against the protestors. that unfortunate lady was caught in between, and this horrid moment took place when the police hit her in her stomach and she lost the baby. this story may be fictitious, but psychologically real - and certainly real in other parts of the world (i've come across stories like this in those biographical books).

and that got me thinking - the movie reaffirmed my stand that that's what i want to fight for. making sure that people in all parts of the world get access to basic shelter and food and water, that they have access to proper medications (and not let politicians just see what they want to see).
