a couple of weeks ago i was at a kpop press conference to help out with handling the media. part of my job was to shoot the korean idols throughout the whole press conference (so near yet so far.. i wanted to ask for a photo but there was simply no time)..
my second attempt at using camcorders - the first was during evelyn's 21st party; eight years ago when i was in sec one.. pretty long hiatus :)
so, yes i was having fun with the camcorder.. but the pr company representative wouldn't have confidence in either ann or myself and kept keeping tabs on us, while telling us "you should take initiative, and not rely on me to give you instructions". yet he wouldn't leave us to our own devices.. literally.
while i was filming, he'd come over to say "don't move, stay at one angle", "don't keep standing there, use your own initiative ok" throughout the one hour plus. initially i would pause the video whenever i moved to another angle, but almost every move i made i received a nag. eventually i decided to follow my own intuition and block out his instructions. (although i was pretty sure he wouldn't like it very much, i thought i should let the work speak for itself.)
true enough, it was evident he wasn't very pleased with ann or myself.. it manifested through his conversation with us at the dinner. of course, dinner was amazingly good despite him comparing us with one of his newly graduated colleague (first class honours from the philippines).. a buffet meal at the ritz carlton with loads and loads of savoury sashimi :) ann and i kept going back for more servings.. tasty tasty tasty :D
i met him again at their office a couple of days back, and he told me, "the video that you took was very good. it was very good, surprisingly. i'll show it to you later".
moral of the story: trust your own capability.. and ignore the vessels that make all sorts of noise around you. there may be times people have little faith in you, but what determines the outcome is your personal belief in yourself. it's ok to be undermined (like the tortoise in the race against the hare) .. keep trudging along with tiny, steady steps; you'll exceed expectations.
